Top 3 waterfall in Kuching to go with family and friends easily

1. Santubong Waterfall
2. Kubah National Park Waterfall
3. Gunung Gading National Park Waterfall

As an explorer in Kuchicng, one of the question that I’m frequently being asked is “Which waterfall can I go over the weekend with my friends/family”
What people want are:

• Easily access within 1 hour
• Near to the place they park
• Have public toilet and bathroom
• Can barbeque

Then I start to put on my thinking cap, and listed a few. Among that I chose these three as the top, and I hope that this can serve as a guideline for you when you visit Kuching, and would like to visit the waterfall.

The Santubong Waterfall

How to go?
Santubong is located on the North of the Kuching city, with just 35KM away from town. A 45 minutes car ride to reach the Santubong Mountain.

The entrance is before the Santubong resort, and on the right there will be a power station, the entrance is just next to the power station.

Do a registration at the Park HQ counter for safely purpose, and you may proceed to start hike to the waterfall. As shown in my picture, the waterfall is located next to the S shape suspension bridge, and from the park HQ to the waterfall only takes about 15 minutes.

Do enjoy the cozy water when your there, very refreshing.

Entrance Fees?
Free of charge, only require you to register your time in, and time out.

What do they have there?
At the waterfall, there are no toilet, no bathroom.



The Kubah National Park Waterfall

How to go?
Situated about 22KM from Kuching, and about half an hours plus of car ride to the park.
Drive all the way to the Matang, there are signboard along the way.

And after the Matang, you will see places like the Red Bridge, the Family Park I, and follow by Family Park II. Right after family park 2, immediately there is an entrance on the left. Drive all the way up, and you can see the Park HQ for the Kubah National Park.

You will need to hike from the park HQ to the waterfall entrance on your right. It takes about 30 minutes to reach the waterfall entrance, you will see a signboard displayed some info about the waterfall.

Then followed by another 20 minutes to reach the waterfall.

Entrance Fees?
Adults is RM10, and require you to go registration at the park HQ counter.

What do they have there?
At the waterfall, no public toilet, no shower, no BBQ pit


The Gunung Gading National Park Waterfall

How to go?
About 1.5 hours drive from Kuching to the small town of Lundu. There are signboard along the way, so you will never get lost.

After you reach the Lundu town, keep on driving to the right side. Drive strait along the way you will notice the sea is at your right. And keep your eyes on the left, cause the entrance of the Gunung Gading national park will be on the left.

After you see the entrance, just drive in. And after the narrow road, you will reach the entrance.
Register your name at the park HQ counter, and the park ranger will issue you a map, the waterfall trails are clearly being marked by red & white color, just follow the correct color code, and you will reach there within an hour time.

The Entrance fees is RM10 per adults.

What do they have there?
At the waterfall just a pagoda for resting
No bathroom, no toilet, no BBQ pit.

Bukit Mas Sembiling Nature Reservre Tasik Mas Trail Limbang Sarawak Borneo

Brief intro of Limbang

Due to its geographical location, the limbang town is completely cut off from the rest of #Sarawak road network. So limbang roads link to Brunei and Temburong.

Exploring the town, its a vast develops town, and people here are utilizing the close diplomatic relationship with the neighboring Brunei county to do business. Good place to live...

Bukit Mas is within the Sembiling Nature Reserve which is the back bone hill of Limbang town, its an easy 30 mins hike up to the summit from either the Bukit Mas, or Tasik Mas trail.

How to get to this trail

1. Via the Bukit Mas route. 
From Pandaruan road, go all the way torwards the Temburong direction, just right after the old abandon Limbang airport, and the army camp, you will see a tarmac road up hill to the telekom and mobile transmission towels.
You can either park your car at the foot hill, or drive all the way up to the guard house near the towel, and start to hike from there.

2. Via Tasik Mas route
The only lake in Limbang is the tasik mas, is before the Limbang museum, and before the Limbang town. You can drive all the way up to the tasik mas (golden lake) recreation park, park your car there, and start to hike up hill.

The pictures below are from the Tasik Mas route, where you use the concrete, and wooden stairs to reach the summit. Its about 610 meter from Tasik Mas to the summit, but when you reach 290 meter, take note on your right...

Follow the warning tape label on the trees, and go into that trail, dont worry about getting lost, cause along the way there are clear label on where to go next, all the routes are clearly label by warning tapes.

Power cables, came all the way from the ground to the transmission towel. Huge effort needed for this work.

Its said that this hill there are bear, and this is one of the evident bear exist. Tree trunk with bear scars can be seem clearly, and I also heard rumor about some hikers encounter bear here. Have to stay alert when hiking here.

Taman Negara Ulu Temburong National Park Exploration with Wilson Chin Brunei Borneo

Brief intro about Temburong

The #Temburong is the eastern-most district in #Brunei on the Borneo island. Its capital is called #Bangar the main town in Temburong.

Temburong is rich in unspoiled nature heritage, one of the protected forest is the Ulu Temburong National Park (Formerly the Batu Apoi Forest Reserve)

How to get to this place?

I went there by car from the Limbang town, be aware that Limbang to Temburong you will need a passport. After I reached, I visited the banks of the Temburong and #Belalong river. So to go to the national park, we need to use long boat by the temburong river, which I don't have time on this trip.

The journey is about 37km from Limbang town, and total driving time is about 55 minutes. When crossing the border, finger cross to hope that not much car queuing up to stamp their passport, cause this will save some time.

There is a lodge, and you can opt to spend a night, called The Freme Rainforest Lodge (www.freme.com)

This suspension bridge is so high, that my legs are shaking when I'm up there...

I swam at that river, very refreshing stream water. The current is a bit strong at the middle, the bank are still ok. There are a lots of rocks in the river, I was amaze how the local can navigate so freely here with their long boat without the boat engine hit the stones.

I like this place, next time I want to spend more time here and visit the national park inside by using the longboat.

Kampung Meritam Mud Vocanoes Exploration with Wilson Chin - Limbang Borneo

I woke up early that morning, as I will be going to a place called the Meritam Village (Kampung Meritam), what is so special about this place? Where is this place located?

Kampung Meritam is located 35km from the Limbang town (in Sarawak, Borneo). What’s special about this place is a bizarre natural phenomenon that occurs here – volcanic mud pots or “mud volcanoes” (some called them mud springs) covering an area that stretches over 10 acres – some of these pots are as tall as 80cm high.

I roam around the place and tried to apply some mud to my hand. Surprisingly it is cold :O cause its volcanic mud, I assume it will be warm just like a hot spring.

A few big mud mounds around the place, and I can see mud and bubbles flowing out from the earth. Simply amazing phenomena 😁

My brother send me there with his car, there is a guardhouse at the entrance, then follow by a wooded pathway which lead us into the mud volcanoes. This place is a bit like a moon landscape with quite a few mud mounds bubbling away around the place.

You can dive in the mud pots, and don't worry about the mud cause you can clean yourself at the guardhouse, they prepared a few gallons of water for people to clean up after the mud spa.

The mud is very slippery, my foot is covered with mud, and when I wear my flipflop it just slips off, so I can only wake barefoot back to the guardhouse to clean myself up. I like this place, and it has a huge potential to become a nice tourist attraction.

Selangau Town Exploration Trip with Wilson Chin, Borneo Sarawak

Selangau is a small town in Borneo Sarawak located at the Sibu-Bintulu road. Situated along the Mukah river. Its famous for its longhouse which owns by the Dayak people, some of them are Rumah Manchong, RUmah Layang, Rumah Teretang, Rumah Usit and more.

I roam around the market which is near the Mukah river, and a lot of local fruits (tropical fruits) are sold here, like durian, coconut, rambutan, and something rare was a pair of poor pangolin. I saw  two dead pangolin at the market, one is the mother, anther is a smaller one it maybe the child.

This is a protected species in Sarawak, I'm so angry that it was killed. Effort should be made by the nature reserve, forestry and any other relevant parties to educate the locals about the importance on protecting these gorgeous animals.

The old shop lots at Selangau town, most shops are run by the Chinese, and opposite the shop is the market, where the dayak people sells fruits and veggie there.

These two pity pangolin are dead, killed!!! I dont know how to express how sad I am after I saw it. This is the first time I saw pangolin in real life, but I prefer to saw it in the wild instead at the market. The local killed it, and will take it scale and sell it to the chinese. Chinese believe that the scale are very rich in medical value, and some part of the scale can be use as exorcism.

My friends in Sarawak, if you see any of your family members or friends caugh this pangolin, please ask them to release this back to the wild where it belong. We have no right to take its life for money.

This is the Mukah river, the river plays an important role in transportation, where the rural folks will use this river to come to town and do trade, children goes to school, and a little bit of tourism where outsider can go visit the longhouse upstream.
