Bamboo, Pepper, and Prayer: A Journey to the Top of Mount Sentah

A few months ago, while exploring Google Earth for peaks along the Kuching-Serian Road, I stumbled upon a location that caught my eye. Tucked about 3km inside Siburan (17th Mile) lies a peak called Mount Sentah. After seeing a collection of stunning photos uploaded by locals, I knew I had to see it for myself.

Last Sunday morning, I packed my Nikon D90 and headed out with two of my aunts. They were looking for a good morning workout, while I was chasing the perfect shot. Nature was on our side at the start; the morning was beautifully overcast, with a thick fog clinging to the woods that made the air feel incredibly crisp and refreshing.

The trail was fascinating. We hiked through dense groves of bamboo and passed clusters of cocoa trees. I was particularly impressed by the ingenuity of the local villagers, who utilized the steep cliffsides to cultivate white pepper.

It took us about 50 minutes to reach the summit, and to my surprise, we discovered a small community living right at the peak! I had seen locals passing us on the way up and assumed they were fellow hikers, but they were actually heading home.

At the very top sits a charming church. Reflecting on my travels through the villages of Sarawak, it’s heartening to see a church in almost every community. I’ve always felt that these spiritual centers play a vital role in guiding the younger generation toward strong moral values.

My photography session peaked at this beautiful hilltop church, but the weather had other plans. Just as I began to frame my shots, the clouds opened up. I didn't get to take nearly as many photos as I wanted because I had to make a mad dash back down the hill to save my gear from the downpour!

Despite the sudden run, the misty beauty of Mount Sentah was worth every step.
