I went to Buntal Village for photo shooting for the second time, but the weather is not as good as the first time. On my way to the village drizzling rain, fortunately when reached the village, it stops.

I've shoot a lot of scene photos, but this time I'll show you some of the photos not related to sunrise.

Visitation to the Niah Cave @ Miri Sarawak

I visited the Niah Cave last weekend with my family and friends. That morning, I wakeup at around 6am. Our initial plan was to wakeup at 5am, and starts our journey at 6am…. Both of my younger brother Kerry and Jye came back home at around 2am last night, so I don’t expect they will wake up on time.

DSC_0325wtmk

We started our journey at around 7am; it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes from Miri to the small town of Niah, and we had our breakfast there. Upon entering Niah town, a nice view awaits us, as I can see the Limestone Mountains surrounding the Niah town.

DSC_0331wtmk

There are only 3 – 4 rows of shophouses. My brothers are familiar with this place, so we had our breakfast at one of the coffee shop there. Most of the Chinese people here they speak Hakka dialect. I ordered my favorite food, the koko noodles, taste really nice :) however, the pricing here are a bit expensive compare to Miri town. My brother told me this is because all the food here needs to pay extra transportation charges.

DSC_0340wtmk

After breakfast, off we go to the Niah National Park. The park is one of Sarawak smaller national park, but this park contain evident of early human activities date back for more than 40,000 years ago. The archaeology found painting on cave wall, wooden coffin which looks like a wooden ship, chopping tools, axes, pottery, and human skull which data at around 38m000 years BCE.

DSC_0355wtmk

The entrance fees for student is RM5, and adults is RM10, then we also need to use a boat to cross a river which cost RM4 per person. From the starting check point to reach the Great Cave (the end point) is approximately 4 KM from the park office.

DSC_0366wtmk

We start our journey at 10am; to reach the cave first is a plank walk which is enclosed on both sides by dense primary rainforest. The trees are so huge that I think it need 10 person holding hands to surround the tree. The forest consists of swap and wetland, I’m pretty sure it might have crocodile there because the water is so calm and a perfect condition for crocs to live.

DSC_0392wtmk

DSC_0406wtmk

I’m the last one in the team, mum and dad walk so fast they lead the team. I have to stop and take some video and photos :) dad always told us he have knees problem, so I was quite impress that he can walk so fast *tsk tsk*

Entering the Great Cave
There are several small cave pathways, and the first to reach is the Trader’s Cave, here lies some strange looking rocks formation. Then a few minutes later, we then reach the Great Cave, according to the record is about 60 meter hight and 250 meter wide, and it is one of the world’s most spectacular cave entrance leading to an even larger chamber within.

DSC_0441wtmk

On the entrance, I can see some archaeological excavation. The authorities fence up the place, so I can’t go in to take a clear photo of it. But it amazing to see it live how the site of an archaeology looks like (always seen this in the TV and books only).

DSC_0474wtmk

Then, we proceed into the cave and I notice the sound of bats and swiftlets are everywhere. Pheww~~~ lucky I have wear my trekking shoes on, cause a lot of guano (bird and bat excrement) covering all over the cave floor. The locals here, they will collect the guano, pack it and then sell to people who use it as fertilizer.

DSC_0548wtmk

Entering the Large Chamber (Padang)
Dad told us that he felt pain on his knee, so we all slow down and rest for a while. We are now inside a larger chamber know as Padang. I watched that movie “Santum”, and there is a scene where the water pouring in due to the heavy rain. The surround atmosphere are the same right now, it gives me the goose bumps. Okok, snap out of it…..

DSC_0490wtmk

Here a shaft of sunlight stream down from the large holes in the cave roof, and the sunlight are so strong that time, it illuminates the bizarre rock formation inside the cave. This is just perfect for me to take a good shoot in the cave. If we’re trap down here, the hole at the cave roof is our only way out, but is like 10 stories height, not easy to climb up there.

DSC_0518wtmk

After this chambers, we then enter to another chambers where is start to become pitch black, good that we bring a lot of torch lights, and are able to find our way along the plankwalk. In this chamber we get to see a lot of strange rocks formations, I believe these are all done by the Mother Nature with wind, and water. And after millions and millions of years later it then forms these wonderful shapes. My flash is not strong enough, so all my photos are pith black.

DSC_0565wtmk

Entering the Painted Cave
Dear dad’s knees are getting worse, but in the same time he’s so exited on exploring the cave, so we keep on encouraging him to forget about the pain. After the pitch black plank walk, we then reach the famous Niah Painted Cave. Again, the paintings are all fence up by the authorities, so I only can take photo from a far distant. I saw some human like cartoon painted on the wall, so the cave man likes art.

DSC_0590wtmk

DSC_0582wtmk

Not just painting, here they also have this “death-ship”. Where this is the coffin for the cave people, I saw a human skeleton there; this might be the one which date back like 40,000 years ago. Is to fascinating to see in real life how a historical human skeleton looks like.

We all took a rest at this cave, and mum bring along some fruits and dumpling that she made, and this is the perfect time to have lunch after all the climbing and walking.

DSC_0591wtmk

Back to the Park Head Quarters
On our way back, what we worry most is dad. He told us that his knees are killing him, poor dad. We all walk very slowly, and keep on encouraging dad to fight the pain.

DSC_0599wtmk

At Niah Cave, the local here also collect birds nest. There are bamboo poles and self-made ladders on the chambers of the cave wall, so they only use this bamboo poles to climb to the cave wall and collect the birds nets. This is extremely danger, they don’t have professional climbing gears, all local made. Is pity where human need to do such danger work to put food on the table for his family.

We reach the park HD at around 2pm, before that we even visited the museum. Dad didn’t go in, he just sit on the chair outside *tsk tsk* he ask us to go ahead. The boat is waiting for us when we reach the jetty, after crossing the river. I drive the car to the entrance to pick up mum and dad.

Is a wonderful family trip, again I manage to cover a new place at Sarawak. Hope I’m able to visit all the magnificent places at Sarawak in the future.

The Climb @ Mount Santubong, Kuching, Sarawak

I’m very excited the day before I went to Santubong Mount. I didn’t manage to reach the summit last time because I’m not feeling well that time, but this time hell I don’t even care of my legs going to be broken or what, I must reach the summit!

DSC_9258wtmk

Start my journey at 08:30AM with 6 of my friends, it was drizzling that morning, and this is good because it’s gonna be a cozy climb. I start up slowly to save my energy, as the higher I reach the tougher it gets to climb up.

There is a total of 15 check points, at F7 is 1960m above sea level. My journey from F1 t0 F7 the first 1000 meter still consider easy, as is just like jungle trekking. But after the 1000m I start to feel my heart bumping very quickly, and I start to feel short of breath. I reach the F7 check point at 09:12AM. We stop for a rest, and I took some photos of the surrounding.

Ok, start our journey again after 5 minutes break. The tracks are getting steep, I walk slowly with very small foot step, and try to go in a zigzag direction, cause I need a lot of energy to walk strait.

DSC_9068wtmk

There are a lot of roots in front of me, just like a bunch of mess-up staircase. I’m worry about my right knee, sometime I will go for a jog and if jog for more than 15 mins my knee will feel pain. I don’t want this to happen in this climb.

My shirt are wet, I have two bottles of water one DSLR camera, and some food on my bagpack. I stop for water, one of my friend overtake me, while the other 4 are far left behind us. After a my drink, I start to walk again. The rain is getting heavier, and the mists are getting thicker, it covers the forest fast with the help of the wind.

Some of the steep place, we have to use the ladder to climb up, and after the ladder when I think that is the summit, well think again cause more ladder, and more staircase root to climb. I forgot what time it is, but I know I have been walking for a very longgggggggggggg time when I reach a pit stop. I’m happy when I saw the signboard from far, cause I tough I reach the summit already.

I run toward the signboard and exhale deeply. I’m only at F8 (2280m), I sit at the ground wipe my sweat, and off I go. The signboard show steeper trek to go, I keep my finger cross to hope I can do it. The 4 of my friends are now far away behind me, and 1 of my friend are way ahead me, so I’m all alone now.

DSC_9097wtmk

When alone, I will have a lot of thinking in my mind, how about you? I’m quite tired, and I blaming myself on not getting any preparation before I climb mount Santubong. I should have at least gone for more jogging to build up my stamina. And also think on why don’t I just wait for the rest of them to just go down and rest. I curse the stupid thinking and keep on walking.

I am not sure I walked for how long, but finally I saw another check point the F12 (2820m). This means that 3 more check points to go. The higher I reach, the thicker the mist. The rain had stop, but I can’t see the view, cause it is all covered by the mist. I inhale, and can feel all the non-polluted cozy fresh air being suck into my lung. I only can get this here, so I had a lot of deep breath.

There are a lot of ladders to climb here, when climbing the ladder; I go one step at a time. When reaching up to the next ladder, I need to use my arm to drag me up. And the rope and ladder are all cover with sand. I didn’t wear gloves, so is a bit painful my palms are like rubbing the sand when pulling the rope. Note to myself, next time should bring hand gloves.

I finally meet up my friend who overtakes me; the both of us stop for a drink. We even called the rest of the gang to checkout where are they now *chuckle* I am very tired at that time, but am surprise that my right knee is still ok. So I keep on going an lead the way this time.

DSC_9089wtmk

Ladder after ladder, my palm are so painful, I hope I don’t get blister after this. All of a sudden, I saw a plate mount on the rock. And on the plate it carves “Datuk Merpati”, I continue my reading and the first paragraph goes like this..

“ Datok Merapati, who originated from Johore on the Malay Peninsular, is he legendary founder of Santubong O_o” *wow, he discover santubong?!* a singnificant trading town and center around the time of the Majapahit Empire during the 10th to 14th centuries.

I am on flat ground now after the plate, and OMG!!! There is a signboard with F15 (3060m) printed on. Yeah!!! Finally I reached the summit of mount Santubong, the time then was 10.50AM. which means it took me a total of 2 hours and 20 minutes to climb the mount. What surprise me more is that I’m not tired, and my knee is ok.

How to insert a Frame in a Photo

Hi Guys, in today DM tutorial I'm gonna teach you guys on how to insert a frame into a photo. You can do so by using a FREE software called Picasa, which is a google product.

Ok, I'll use a photo of my dear mum as an example to teach you how to insert frame in a photos. Lets go...

Download the free Picasa here.

01

01. First after you finish install the picasa software, look for the icon, and double click to run the software.

02

02. Then, we have to select the photo that we want to insert frame. If you select one only, picasa will select all your photos in that album. So the trick here is to select 2 photos, and click on the "Create Photo Collage" button.

03

03. Ok, here we remove that 2nd photo. You just point your mouse pointer there, right click and select remove.

04

04. Then, we have to make sure that the photo is fit into that canvas. So we have to manually adjust the photo, you do this by dragging the little round button with your mouse, hold and drag.

05

05. Now, we can see that the photo is nicely place where we wanted. So proceed to next step...

06

06. Now if you want to change the color of the canvas, you can do so by clicking on the color plate. This is next to the solid color option.

07

07. After you are satisfy with the color, is time to save this photos. Click on the Create Collage button here.

08

08. If you see this, means you are nearly success.

09

09. Ok, now after the processing, remember to save this photos. Select File > Save As... and save this photo into your computer (remember the location you save it).

10

10. Walah!!! so here you have sucessfuly insert a frame in a photo (with free and easy to use software).

My local village trip @ Danu Village (Kampung Danu)

This is one of the local village in Kuching, Sarawak, called the Danu Village. One unique thing about this village is that to enter the village, we have to cross a suspension bridge.

View the location here. <--- Click for Map

The bridge is like a lifeline to the village, if it collapse the whole village people will not be able to either get in or out of the village.

There is a huge river which separate the village and the outside world. When I reach there, saw kids swimming in the river. I step into the river to soak my feet, very cozy. And the stream water flows very quick.

Is not hard to imagine the waterflow here after a big downpour. It will be like a moster...
Upon entering the village, there is a mini flower garden, and they have a bunch of nice flower there.

The village people park their cars outside the entrance, and life here are simple and quiet. Check out the scenery video I've shoot during my visitation.

Cheers,
Wilson
I like to cross bridges

Lunch @ Macheree Homestay & Adventure

After my friends and I visited the Annah Rais hotspring... we went to the homestay just opposite the entrance of hotspring.

The homestay is run by a local villages people there, and the mum is the hotel manager, the father is the chef in the house, the two young daughter are the waiterss, and the brother is the ..... nop when I was there he just sat there are ate his lunch.

This homestay provided a variety of tour packages, they have a daytrip tour, and also an overnight tour package (A total of 6 to be exact).

The food there is super delicious, the father told us the he made the food aroma with local herb and spices, and blend them by using traditional way. All organic, no pesticide. And he also charge us RM5 per plate of food, that is damn cheap!!!

Check out the surrounding in my video below :)

Cheers,
Wilson
I want to overnight here :D

The new Annah Rais Hot Spring

Before you read on, go read my ----->> first trip here (before renovation) <<----- :D Cause this is the version before the renovation of the place :) The video below is after the renovation

The Annah Rais after the renovation

Annah Rais is a village name, and just a few kilometer away from the Annah Raise village, there is a stream which according to the locals there few thousand ago it was a volcanic active spot. So that is where the hotspring came from.

Check out the video here :)

To go there, first need to head to 10th Mile (Padawan), then need to go to the direction there Borneo Highland is.

After you drive pass Borneo Highland, look for road sign for Annah Raise Village (Kampung Annah Raise). Is gonna be a long and lonely ride to Annah Raise village, surrounded by tress only.

Then, after you reach the Annah Raise village (longhouse), need to drive another 20-30 min road (bumpy rocks road), and make sure you keep an eyes on the road sign to the Annah Raise Hot Spring.

I overnight at the local Sarawak longhouse

The Dunuk village, this is a village situated here (click for map). For the pass few years I've been visiting this village with my friends.

1. 2008 visitation to Dunuk Village
2. 2009 Visitation to Dunuk Village
3. 2010 visitation to Dunuk Village

This year 2011, I get another change to revisit the village again. This time it was organised by the Tzu Chi Foundation (Kuching Branch). This program is to offer the nearby village a free medical checkup, and medical treatment. Is a large scale program, so they require a lot of volunteer workers. I participated the programs with few of my friends.

The setting up start at Saturday, and the treatment will starts at Sunday. My friends and I reach at Saturday, and after the setting up is done, we went roaming in the village, I shoot a lot of short clips there.

Copy of IMG_5323

I get to play with the village boys, overnight at the longhouse. I sleep around 9PM, and wakes up at 5AM, a very simple and healthy life. I had fun playing with the village kids, and a good experience overnight at the village longhouse. Check out my video for the full story :)

Cheers,
Wilson
